Islands of Hope programme
Seed funding programme for transdisciplinary teams in the sectors of the just and sustainable transition.
Where we live, how we move, how we nourish ourselves, how we power our lives, how we heal… Discover the Islands of Hope, proving that in a complex and challenging world, collaboration is our greatest strength.
The Islands of Hope Seed Funding Programme was created to encourage the exploration of new methods of knowledge production, alternative economic practices, and sustainable financing models that contribute to just and sustainable transitions.
Based on the Islands of Hope concept developed by the House of Sustainable Transitions (HOST-VUB), the seed funding is coordinated by Prof. Cathy Macharis for the Swifft Collective, and funded by Helios Foundation. This unique programme supports transdisciplinary research projects that bring together academics and on-the-ground organisations, and enables the realisation of on-the-ground projects in Brussels and in Belgium.
By challenging conventional systems of knowledge production and societal organisation, the call seeks innovative approaches that prioritise equity, sustainability, and well-being. Ultimately, the programme aims to foster systemic change in how we organise, interact, and live together in the world.
In 2025, seven projects were selected for funding. These initiatives are pioneering sustainable transitions across a range of sectors, including the economy, education, energy, food and agriculture, governance, and mobility. Together, they address pressing global challenges and offer forward-looking solutions for a more sustainable future.
Upcoming call for funding in 2027
Helios Foundation and the Swifft Collective invite transdisciplinary teams to apply for the second Islands of Hope Seed Funding Programme, a unique platform for developing bold, innovative projects that catalyse sustainable transitions and generate lasting change.
