Chair in Decarbonisation and Finance

Finance can shape society in different ways: it can act as a prefigurative tool, reflecting the kind of society we seek to design and build.

Bringing together geography and finance, this chair aims to develop a comprehensive approach to financing climate and energy transitions. Their goal is to help understand, reshape and reimagine the strategies and the barriers to financing the decarbonisation of Belgian and European societies.

From the role of the state to more niche actors such as impact finance, the Decarbonisation and Finance Chair maps the financial landscape across the spectrum, capturing the diverse actors, demands, and needs that shape this ecosystem, and linking them to what is often referred to as the real economy. While rooting the analysis into concrete realities of financial bottlenecks, the chair also wants to question existing theories and open the debate to engage with fundamental societal challenges, such as social justice and post-growth economies.

Transdisciplinary at its core, the chair aims to provide a hub for finance researchers, policy makers, civil society and practitioners, while connecting stakeholders to national and international research communities.
