Heal

Hospitals feed millions of people every year... but at what cost?

Anchored in a multi-criterion evaluation framework that encompasses environmental impact, health outcomes, economic viability, and stakeholder acceptance, the initiative will deploy Ecotarian’s automated labelling and reporting tools, coupled with targeted “nudging” interventions and kitchen staff workshops. Data collected will allow for the study of meal choices, CO₂ emissions, water and land use, and patient/staff satisfaction.

The project’s primary objectives are to demonstrate that targeted interventions can reduce hospital meal environmental impact by 30% while enhancing nutritional quality and customer satisfaction, and generate a scalable framework to be used for follow-up projects.

By leveraging hospitals as living laboratories, the project aims to challenge entrenched food service models and foster a culture of informed nutritional choices. This initiative not only addresses immediate challenges, such as reducing the carbon footprint of food production and preparation, but also offers long-term benefits including improved patient recovery, reduced incidence of diet-related illnesses.

The goal of Heal is to build a strong, evidence-based framework, scale the model, and make it work everywhere; for fewer emissions, and better health for everyone.
